Located at Exit 4 off Interstate 80, this access road is your main route to drive directly onto the 30,000-acre salt crust. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oversees this site.
During late summer and early fall, the flats dry out to support vehicles and racing events. If the salt is wet, driving is strictly prohibited. General public access is free, but check schedules for event closures.

This paved road runs from Interstate 80 directly to the edge of the salt flats. It serves as the main portal for drivers heading onto the hard white crust. Always stop at the end of the pavement to evaluate conditions. Do not drive further if the salt looks wet or muddy.

Land speed records have been set here since 1914. Designated tracks are laid out during late summer and fall for permitted racing events. When events are not running, it is an open expanse of flat salt. Check the BLM schedule before you arrive, as access is restricted during events.

This light brown muddy perimeter surrounds the main white salt crust. It is highly deceptive and extremely hazardous for vehicles. Never drive on the brown mud. Vehicles frequently sink to their axles here and require expensive towing.
