Convenient pull-offs directly off Interstate 80 offer the fastest access to the salt flats.
You do not need a specialized vehicle to reach the edge of the Bonneville Salt Flats. The rest areas along I-80 provide safe parking, basic amenities, and direct pedestrian access to the salt crust.
These stops are ideal for travelers short on time or those who want to avoid driving directly on the corrosive surface.
30-45 minutesBathrooms and foot-wash station
This is the main stop when driving west from Salt Lake City. It features bathrooms and immediate access to walk onto the pristine salt. Use the outdoor water spigot to wash the corrosive salt off your shoes before returning to your car.
20-30 minutesElevated viewing platform
You can only access this stop when driving east from Wendover. It offers an elevated platform that is excellent for panoramic photography. You cannot cross the interstate here. If you are coming from Salt Lake City, you must drive further west to turn around.
30 minutesPedestrian access only
This is the immediate salt crust bordering the rest areas. Visitors can safely walk out and experience the hard texture without risking a vehicle. Do not attempt to drive off the rest area parking lots onto the salt. Access here is strictly for pedestrians.
